PHYSICIANS

Prof. Avi Porath, MD

Prof. Avi Porath, MD is the Director of the Health Division of Maccabi Healthcare Services. Prof. Porath obtained his M.D. degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and his M.P.H. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, and is currently a Professor of Medicine at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Prof. Porat was recently appointed President-Elect of the Israel Society of Quality in Healthcare. Prior to coming to Maccabi, he served as director of Medical Policy at the Clalit Health Services, and was the director of the Internal Medicine Department at the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, Israel. Prof. Porath pioneered the program of National Quality Measurement in Israel.

Varda Shalev, MD MPA

Varda Shalev, MD MPA is the Director of the Department of Medical Informatics at Maccabi Healthcare Services and a primary care physician. She has been at the forefront of the development of a doctor-friendly electronic medical record and a sophisticated physician support system including alerts, reminders and decision support. With an MD degree from Ben-Gurion University Medical School, she completed her residency in family medicine (with honors) and earned an MPA in Public Health Administration at Clark University. After a two-year fellowship in medical informatics at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Dr. Shalev established the Department of Medical Informatics at Maccabi and was responsible for planning and developing its computerized medical systems. She has pioneered the development of multiple disease registries to support chronic disease management. Shalev's research interests are in epidemiology and medical informatics in community healthcare. She is a member of the European Health Telematics Association and the American Medical Informatics Association. Dr. Shalev is a faculty member at the Tel Aviv University School of Public Health.

Iris Goren, MD

Iris Goren, MD, as head of the Medical Registries Team in the Maccabi Department of Medical Informatics, is responsible for leading the process of characterizing and building the Maccabi medical registries. She also leads data mining and epidemiologic research efforts. Prior to assuming her current role, Iris led a unique project in computational medicine and pharmacogenomics as part of a joint venture between Maccabi and Compugen. Iris received her MD at Tel-Aviv University, Sackler School of Medicine.

EPIDEMIOLOGISTS & DATA ANALYSTS

Barbara Silverman, MD

Barbara Silverman, MD, MPH is the Unit Head, Research and Academics Unit, in Maccabi's Department of Research and Evaluation. Prior to coming to Maccabi, Dr. Silverman served as Medical Officer in Epidemiology at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and at the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Silverman received her MD at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and her MPH in public health and epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, public health interventions, health care quality measures and observational research based on large administrative databases.

Gabriel Chodick, PhD

Gabriel Chodick, PhD is the Unit Head, Epidemiology and Database Research, in Maccabi's Department of Research and Evaluation. He earned an MS and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Tel Aviv University, where he also completed his masters in Health Administration. He was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. Dr. Chodick is responsible for the database epidemiological studies at Medical Informatics Department. He is a lecturer at the School of Public Health in Tel Aviv University where he teaches both undergraduate and medical school epidemiology courses for over ten years. Dr. Chodick has an adjunct position at the Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics at the NIH.

Raanan Raz, PhD

Raanan Raz, PhD is an epidemiologist in Maccabi's Medical Informatics Department. Dr. Raz completed his BSc at the Open University, Israel, with honors in the field of computer sciences, and has worked as a software engineer in database environments in various hi-tec companies. He completed his PhD, in which he managed a double-blind placebo-controlled study, at the Gonda Brain Research center at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Prior to joining Mccabi, Dr. Raz was in charge of research at the Child Development Center at Sheba Medical Center, Israel. He is currently completing a Masters Degree in Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University.

Inbal Goldstein, Msc

Inbal Goldstein,Msc is a biostatistician at Maccabi's Medical Informatics Department. She earned a Bsc in Industrial engineering& management from the Technion Israel institute of technology, and an Msc. in Biostatistics at Tel Aviv university. Mrs. Goldstein works as part of the database epidemiological studies team at Medical Informatics Department.

Virginie Simah, MPA

Virginie Simah, MPA, is the head of the Database Query Team in the Maccabi Department of Medical Informatics. She is responsible for data retrieval. She also leads diagnosis and treatment coding within Maccabi. Virginie works closely with the bio-informatics team to analyze, design and create new databases. Virginie earned an MPA in Public Health Administration at Clark University in 2005 .

PHARMACIST

Yossi Lomnicky, PhD

Yossi Lomnicky, PhD, Maccabi's Chief Pharmacist, holds a PhD in Pharmacology from Hebrew University and a degree in computer science from Bar Ilan University. He is responsible for the management of a chain of 50 networked pharmacies owned by Maccabi in addition to 650 private pharmacies which provide medications to Maccabi members. Dr. Lomnicky is also involved in setting policy for prescribing and dispensing drugs. He is presently a member of the Ministry of Health's emergency committee for medical supplies. Lomnicky has served as Advisor to the Ministry of Health, emergency unit and, in the IDF was Chief Pharmacist and Head of the Medical Equipment Branch at the Surgeon General Headquarters (LTC). Internationally he has been a consultant to the Swiss Army and a medical devices company in Turkey.

Sabina Abrahami, RN, BA

Sabina Abrahami is the Director of Business Development for Maccabi's Database aand Clinical Research Services. She has almost 20 years of experience in sales and marketing in the pharmaceutical industry and previous experience in hospital and community healthcare. Sabina received her degree from Tel Aviv University.
