CEO, Varda Shalev, MD MPA

Prof. Varda Shalev, MD MPH, is the director of Maccabitech, and an active primary care physician. With an MD degree from Ben-Gurion University Medical School, she completed her residency in family medicine (with honors) and earned an MPA in Public Health Administration at Clark University. After a two-year fellowship in medical informatics at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Prof. Shalev established the Department of Medical Informatics at Maccabi and was responsible for planning and developing its computerized medical systems. She has pioneered the development of multiple disease registries to support chronic disease management. Shalev's research interests are in epidemiology and medical informatics in community healthcare. She is a member of the European Health Telematics Association and the American Medical Informatics Association. Prof. Shalev is an Associate Professor at the Tel Aviv University School of Public Health and authored or co-authored over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

EPIDEMIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND DATABASE RESEARCH

Gabriel Chodick, PhD, MHA

Prof. Gabriel Chodick, PhD, MHA, is the Unit Head, Epidemiology and Database Research, in MaccabiTech. Prof. Chodick is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health in Tel Aviv University and an adjunct researcher at the Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics at the NIH. He earned an MSc and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Tel Aviv University, where he also completed his Masters in Health Administration. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the School of Public Health, UNC at Chapel Hill and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md. Prof. Chodick is the Head of Epidemiology and Database Research at MaccabiTech, and has authored or co-authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dahlia Weitzman, PhD

Dr. Dahlia Weitzman, PhD, is an epidemiologist at Maccabitech and project lead for real-world evidence research related to cardiovascular diseases and rheumatology. She earned a PhD in epidemiology from Ben Gurion University of the Negev and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel-Aviv University and the Heart Institute of Sheba Medical Center. Her BSc and MSc are in chemistry and neurophysiology from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Dahlia has taught epidemiology, biostatistics and research methods and has been a research advisor at the Medical School for International Health, a joint program of Ben-Gurion University and Columbia University and, presently, teaches at the School of Public Health at Tel Aviv University.

Inbal Goldshtein, MSc

Inbal Goldshtein, MSc, is a biostatistician at Maccabitech and project lead for real-world evidence research on osteoporosis and diabetes. She earned a BSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Technion Israel institute of Technology, an MSc in Biostatistics from Tel Aviv University and she is currently a PhD candidate at Tel Aviv University. Inbal’s MSc thesis focused on “Statistical inference on the standardized morbidity ratio in small samples, with application to stroke incidence and factor XI”. Her recent work includes the establishment of a large osteoporosis cohort which serves as the basis for further pharmacoepidemiological and outcomes studies. In addition, her research interests include applying machine-learning methods, for example, in using complete blood count data for colorectal cancer screening.

Clara Weil, MSc

Clara Weil, MSc, is an epidemiologist at Maccabitech and project lead for real-world evidence research on infectious diseases. She earned a Master in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, after completing a BSc in Immunology at University College London. Clara’s MSc thesis focused on “Dietary nutrient intake in the Uganda Millennium Village and demographic and socioeconomic determinants thereof”. Clara’s primary research interests are hepatitis C and vaccine-preventable diseases. In addition, her recent work includes research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Dalit Goldstein, MSc

Dalit Goldstein, MSc, is an epidemiologist at Maccabitech. She earned an MSc in Epidemiology and BSc in Biology from Tel Aviv University. Dalit’s MSc thesis focused on “Health Related Quality of Life of Community Dwelling Stroke Survivors in Israel”. In addition to diabetes research, Dalit’s recent work includes real-world studies on pharmacoepidemiology and burden of disease of urological and dermatological conditions.

Cheli Melzer Cohen, MSc

Cheli Melzer Cohen, MSc, is an epidemiologist at Maccabitech and project lead for real-world evidence research on diabetes. She earned a BSc and MSc in Biology from Tel Aviv University, where she is currently completing an MSc in Biostatistics. Cheli’s research interests include diabetes treatment and its association with renal function.

Sarah Moser, MSc

Sarah Sharman Moser, MSc, is an epidemiologist at Maccabitech and project lead for real-world evidence research on osteoporosis. She earned a Masters in Clinical Pharmacy (research) from De Montfort University Leicester, UK, after completing a Bachelor in Pharmacy at the London School of Pharmacy. Sarah’s research interests include the treatment and burden of osteoporosis in the community.

Rachel Katz, MBA

Rachel Katz, MBA, is a data analyst at Maccabitech. She earned a BA in Psychology and Political Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and an MBA from Bar Ilan University in Israel, and previously worked in the high-tech industry.
